Scotchman and Young's convenience stores score with nostalgic candy display. Up late one night channel surfing, convenience store marketing executive Rich Mione was intrigued by a program on the Food Network profiling a woman who, from her garage, sold candy popular in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Taking the idea to supplier J.T. Davenport & Sons Inc., Mione said candy brokers and manufacturers were "pumped up, but shocked" at his request for old-time goodies. The Memory Lane seven-rack display — measuring nearly 5 feet high, 18 inches wide — holds 19 SKUs, including Slo-Pokes; marshmallow 'ice cream' cones; Teaberry, Black Jack and Clove chewing gums; Pop Rocks; and candy necklaces. The displays were placed near the front of the stores, on an endcap, often next to a Coca-Cola-branded mini cooler. In some sites, the merchandiser sits next to a nostalgic Coke cooler filled with 8-ounce glass bottles of cola.
