Pennsylvania-based company Wawa, opened its first convenience store (c-store) in 1964, and thrived on change and innovation ever since. Wawa's name is synonymous with top-quality convenience retailing, both among peers in the c-store industry and among the chain's customers. The chain is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its first convenience store on the 16th of this month with a relatively quiet ceremony at store number one that will focus on store managers, employees and customers, not chain executives. The emphasis on the store and its crew is appropriate, Wawa's much-vaunted food service program got its start some 30 years ago when some store managers went against company policy and started making sandwiches and coffee to sell to customers because that's what customers wanted, customers may serve themselves quickly and smoothly without getting in one another's way. INSET: The History of Wawa.
