C-Store Saturation Study

This artile presents statistics related to the convenience store (c-store) industry in the U.S. Over the past several years, a seemingly constant stream of mergers and acquisitions within the convenience store industry has changed the face of the retail marketplace and in many cases created uncertainty as to where new store development and industry growth will come from. Of course, the numbers are only part of the story in determining if an area is under- or oversaturated by c-stores. With the 2003 c-store count posting a decline — the first in years— the era of booming store growth is officially over, and the time for strategic store opening is here. Saturation is defined as population divided by c-stores. The national average saturation is 2,444 people per c-store. The saturation for each state and Metropolitan Statistical Area is calculated; results are then indexed against the national average. An index of 1.00 is average. Any index above 1.00 indicates an area with fewer people per c-store than the national average.
