Convenience store operators have rolled out loyalty programs involving customer cards and frequent shopper plans that capture purchase information. Retailers can use the data to target their shoppers with individual marketing programs that offer discounts on merchandise or other advantages. Retailers may be missing a big opportunity to build customer loyalty and at the same time address an enormous public health problem that threatens the well-being of many Americans, including children. If store operators were to offer a range of healthier food products, and convey a strong, sincere message that they truly care about their customers, they would win the loyal patronage of many customers.
