ABSTRACT
The textile industry in India is facing uncertainty following the country's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in April 1, 2001. The small scale reservations and concessions have always been the stumbling block and would be more so with a globally powerful garment industry resting on the rump of decentralized small scale units scattered all over India. The absence of a satisfactory industrial structure necessary to allow producers to compete as well as expand the world market share is another problem. A small step has been taken to dereserve garments but this will have to be followed up by dereserving the knitting, woven and made-up sectors as well. Product reservations, especially for handlooms, is yet another problem.
