Proponents Of Hands-On Science Instruction Win The Battle, But Maybe Not The War, In California

Publishers of K-12 science materials last month escaped a blow when the California state Board of Education voted to consider materials for adoption that include "at least" 20% to 25% hands-on activities. In doing so, the board rejected the recommendation of the state Curriculum Commission to limit hands-on activities to no more than 25% of instructional materials considered for adoption. While science debates in many state capitals revolve around the teaching of evolution, the California debate struck at the heart of instructional methodology.
