ABSTRACT
With the U.S. personnel dying daily in Iraq, the idea of robots taking over hazardous combat missions from human soldiers is an easy way to sell the benefits of military research to the American public. On such attempt in this direction turned into a debacle, when, in a U.S. Army robot vehicle challenge, every entrant crashed or broke down. Defense research agency Darpa had offered $1 million to the developer of any unmanned vehicle that could cross 150 miles of California's most unforgiving terrain.
