ABSTRACT
A change in familiar routines especially when it involves the departure of a cherished caregiver can be confusing and upsetting to young children. Here's how to help a child through the transition. A 4-year-old daughter Samantha's babysitter, Angie, told that she was leaving to go back to school. Samantha's parents and teacher are right, Angie's departure and the change in her routine have affected Samantha's mood. If a child's caregiver stays in close touch with a family, a child's teacher can echo these sentiments. The transition would be easier if each parent spent a few afternoons with Samantha and her new babysitter. INSET: Helping Children to Manage Feelings of Loss and Separation.
