Lighting's New Direction

The article reports on advancements in the field of lighting technology and the areas influenced by it. Three areas have been fueled by advances in reflector design, high intensity discharge (HID) technology and new applications. New computer programs allow engineers to experiment with various reflector shapes, sizes and materials and closely predict the resulting beam pattern that a reflector design will produce using a given light source. Recent advances in electronic ballast design make the new generation of HID lights feasible for the fire service. All of this light technology is only useful if it is packaged so lights are easy to use, reliable and safe.
