The article discusses the common theme of 2017 film award contenders for 2018, with most of the films largely connected with the past that charts the monumental events in the U.S. and abroad. Among them are "The Lost City of Z" about the Amazon jungle explorers "Darkest Hour" focusing on the World War II in Europe and "Detroit" about the 1967 innter-city riot, presenting the views of screenwriters in the issue like Anthony McCarten, Mark Boal, and Dee Rees.
