Importance The paper studies the uneven distribution of credit institutions among the regions of the Russian Federation. Objectives In this work, I aim to evaluate and analyze the Russian regions' inequality in banking services provided by credit institutions operating in the given territory. Methods In this study, I use calculation of the Herfindahl-Hirschman concentration indices, the weighted coefficients of variation, and the Gini, tabular and graphical analysis. For the purpose of comparative analysis, I compute deposits and loans for population per capita, as well as deposits and loans for legal entities to GRP. Results I found a decrease in the Russian regions credit institution provision and change in the architecture of the banking system. I have also revealed the growth of profit and territory concentration in the banking system. Besides, I indicate a significant reduction in regional lending disparities over the period of 2001-2016. Conclusions and Relevance The territory expansion of the federal level credit institutions to the Russian regions leads to their equal provision with banking services, lending primarily.
