This article presents information on the virtualisation offerings of Hewlett-Packard, as of February 2004. The company has expanded its offerings with new technologies and services. The approach creates an environment where information technology (IT) resources are pooled and shared so usage is optimised and supply automatically meets demand. The aim is to drive down users' IT costs while increasing business agility. Having a virtual image and management of all IT resources enables companies to dynamically grow and shrink server resources. A recent report by Gartner found that enterprises that do not use virtualisation technologies would spend 25 percent more annually for hardware, software, labour and space for Intel servers and 15 percent more the same for RISC servers. The services can guide customers through a phased approach to assessing and optimising their entire business and IT environment to determine which processes are the best and then implement the solutions and provide support as needed. There is a range of management options for customers, from complete utility offerings to outsourcing solutions. Specific functions include a broadening of pay per use offerings for servers.
