ABSTRACT
This article reports that a consortium led by the WS Atkins has won a 400,000 fund contract to assess road-user charging which may be used as paid of the local contribution for the planned Light Rapid Transit scheme in Bristol. Like many local authorities, the Bristol City Council is seeking ways to improve access to its city center while easing traffic congestion. Light rail schemes have proved effective elsewhere, but any scheme must be sustainable. The city believes a road-user charging scheme within the city's inner ring road could provide the twin benefits of acting to cut congestion and as a possible source of funds for the transit scheme.
