ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the half-day workshop which was led by Linda Jones and focused on the management of agency and casual staff. This workshop was sponsored by the Warehousing and Materials Handling Special Interest Group of the Institute of Logistics and Transport. Linda Jones pointed out that it is important for employers to understand the legal definitions of employees, workers and the genuinely self-employed. The delegates found out from the practical exercises they worked through, that the distinctions between an employee and a worker are not always clear cut. However in the light of case law to ensure that agency workers cannot be classified as employees, client companies must ensure that the agency retains ultimate control over the individual, including discipline and termination.
