ABSTRACT
This article reports on the presentation given by Andrew Bell to the members of the Scottish branch of the Institute of Logistics and Transport about the sea-link to the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena. He explained that Saint Helena was established as a staging-post by the British East India Co., of whose building it retains a unique collection. The road network on Saint Helena was described as limited. Islanders were currently voting on whether there should, at least, be an airstrip. Andrew Bell feared that this might offer little relief to the island's reliance on the ten million pound grant in aid each year from the British taxpayer plus the 1.5 million pounds as a shipping subsidy since what was in prospect might turn out to be no more than a twice-weekly feeder from the Ascension.
