Researchers at International Business Machines Corp. have invented, as of January 2004, a smart shopping cart that looks similar to a regular cart but has an interactive screen and scanner mounted near the shopper. When shoppers swipe their store cards, their shopping history becomes available, allowing for the presentation of a suggested shopping list, alerts on discounts, or reminders about perishables purchased a month ago.
