ABSTRACT
Body mass index (BMI) is the ratio of weight to height and is more useful than weight alone in detecting excessive weight gain. A healthy BMI number depends on a child's stature. Early BMI screening can detect significant physical changes, such as a child's BMI jumping from the 70th percentile to the 75th percentile within one year. This helps parents and teachers intervene before a child has to struggle with being overweight.
