Background. Control of stroke risk factors, early recognition of stroke symptoms and call-outs to the emergency medical service are necessary factors in reducing stroke morbidity rates and instigating pre-hospital stroke care. Lack of public knowledge in regard to stroke symptoms is an important cause of delay in accessing medical institutions. The level of stroke morbidity in Lithuania is high and this problem is poorly investigated in our country. This study was designed to assess publ ic awareness of stroke warning signs, risk factors and first actions after suspicion of stroke. Methods. Anonymous cross-sectional study was performed in 2015 in Vilnius city, involving 362 respondents without medical education or past stroke events. Data was collected using structured questionnaire which consisted of 19 questions. Information on the awareness of stroke warning signs, risk factors, sources of information and first actions after suspicion of stroke was assembled with open ended questions. The correct stroke characteristic symptoms were selected according to the guidelines of National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Statistical analysis was performed in MS Office Excel 2010 program. Results. 84.3% ofrespondentswereabletoidentifyandname stroke warning signs. The most common warning sign of stroke listed by respondents was language impairment (39.2%). 46.1% of respondents reported more than one symptom of stroke while 26.2% of respondents were not able to name at least one warning sign. The most commonly identified risk factors were smokt ing (44.8%) and arterial hypertension (35.9%). Only a small part of respondents were able to list other significant stroke risk factors such as dyslipidemia (20.2%), diabetes (8.3%), atrial fibrillation and other heart diseases (5.2%). The main source where respondents obtained information about stroke was press and books (40%). It was noted that 86% of respondents would refer to the emergency medtcal service in case the first symptoms of stroke occur. Conclusions. Based on the study results, nearly one-third of respondents are not aware of stroke symptoms which potentially prevents instigating pre-hospital stroke care and proper treatment. In order to reduce morbidity, improve acute stroke identification and accelerate stroke patient arrival to medical institutions, targeted public education on stroke and its prevention is necessary.
