This article is an edited version of the Pegasus Lecture 2000 given to the members of the Institute of Logistics and Transport at the Manchester Airport by Rod Hill, managing director of the Liverpool Airport. He emphasized in his opening remarks that the challenges being faced by Liverpool applied equally to most other regional airports in Great Britain and beyond. He highlighted some of the many external and internal factors that impact on a regional airport. What is apparent when taking these into account is that regional airports have an important role to play in Great britain and regional economies and also in the development of the total aviation system. It is imperative that the government of the country allows for the continued growth of air traffic through the development of regional airports.
