ABSTRACT
This article highlights that Fourth Pan-European Transport Conference which was held in 2000 in Budapest, Hungary. The conference was organized jointly by the International Union of Railways (UIC), the Community of European Railways (CER) and the Union of European Railway Industries (UNIFE) in cooperation with the Hungarian State Railways. There was a debate on some key issues for transportation in general and for railway policy in particular. The context is changing, as an enlarged Europe grapples with the new challenges of delivering sustainable mobility against a backdrop of economic growth. Discussions at the conference took place in four workshops, the topics for which were derived from work carried out by the UIC, at its East-West Task Force in particular, as well as by the CER and the UNIFE.
