ABSTRACT
This article reports that the Cambridge Rapid Transit System (CRTS) is being promoted, as of 2000, by a wide range of organizations as a major public transportation initiative for Cambridge that addresses existing transport problems and provides a sustainable framework within which to consider further developments. The CRTS will utilize, in part, sections of discussed railway to provide a high-speed and reliable link between existing and new communities, major employment areas and social facilities, and will integrate directly with existing bus and rail services. The CRTS promises to deliver an attractive and real alternative to the car by providing high levels of passenger comfort and security, fast, frequent and reliable services, up-to-the minute passenger information, easy boarding and alighting, low, or zero, emission vehicles and flexibility to adapt service patterns as new developments occur.
