This article focuses on new titles displayed by various children's book publishers at the annual conference of the American Library Association (ALA) held in San Diego, California last week. The 2004 winners of the John Newberry and Randolph Caldecott medals were announced at the conference. Simon & Schuster's Children's Publishing division prominently displayed "Duck for President," written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin, even giving away faux presidential placards. Hyperion, a division of Walt Disney Co., also had a strong showing at the ALA meeting. A major April 2004 release is "Sign of the Qin" by L.G. Bass, which Angus Killick, director of school and library marketing, described as "Lord of the Rings Meets Harry Potter." Hyperion walked away with a Caldecott Honor for "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus," illustrated and written by Mo Willems.
