ABSTRACT
What a distribution company must do to survive and thrive in the evolving European Union, as of 2001, were enumerated. A company must ensure that the needs of the supply chain will be met and improved upon, ensure that future business growth is a part of the logistics strategy, and ensure that the needs of the organization will be met through streamlined costs, concentration on core competencies, and focused technology and communications. The design of a logistics network, no matter where it is located, is dependent on factors such as the type of products, range and volume of products, geographic spread of service area, level of service required and number and type of customers. Therefore, the way to achieve pan-European logistics excellence is to apply strategic planning methodology to the network design.
