ABSTRACT
The impact of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S. on the work of the Institute of Logistics and transport was analyzed. The immediate issues, such as increased security on transport and at interchanges, are not unfamiliar. Although the balance of responsibility between governments and business in matters of security will doubtless come back into contention, the institute has experience to draw upon. There are also important issues of business confidence, and confidence in business, which are more subtle, and which extend beyond immediate concerns of recession into society as a whole. In the months ahead, members should expect much greater consultation among the membership as a whole, as the proposals for organizational change achieve greater maturity and can be considered for adoption by the membership through its democratic process.
