ABSTRACT
The lecture delivered by David Leeder, director of marketing for the National Express Group plc, during the Frederick Speight Lecture 2001 which was sponsored by the Stoke and Srafford branch of the Institute of Logistics and Transport is the focus of this article. Outlining the history of the National Express organization, he explained how the group has moved forward to become a strong brand name and network as opposed to an operator, and how diversification within the transportation market led the group into airport and train operating acquisitions. Explaining that the principles of success apply across all types of passenger modes, he emphasized the importance of a strong brand with a high recognition value.
