ABSTRACT
In June 1999 the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors published a comprehensive guidance booklet on identifying and implementing Transport Development Areas (TDA). TDAs are described as well-designed, higher density development around public transportation nodes. The publication is backed by all of the practical planning and transportation professions, by the Local Government Association, the Strategic Rail Authority and many others. It provides professionals with the information they require to implement TDAs, including a full range of illustrative case studies. To accompany the launch of the booklet, a number of regional seminars were sponsored by the five leading professional bodies involved in planning and development. The seminars explored the application of the concept, with a focus on providing good guidance on the practical process of implementation.
