ABSTRACT
According to the provisional statistics issued by the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions of Great Britain, freight traffic through the country's ports fell in 1999. Total freight traffic fell by seven million tons to 566 million tons in 2001. Inwards traffic rose by 13 million tons to 329 million tons while outwards traffic fell by 20 million tons to 236 million tons. Freight traffic through the 52 major ports reached 548 million tons, down seven million tons on 2000. For the second year running, the Grimby's and Immingham was the leading port in 2001 with 54.8 million tons. These summary port traffic statistics for 2001 are provisional. Final figures, together with more detailed results will be published in the annual report Maritime Statistics 2001, due out in October 2000.
