ABSTRACT
This article suggests that there will be great opportunities for the purchasing professional within the electronic commerce system. The universal benefits of online shopping are likely to be appreciated only when consumers have confidence in supply. It means that companies which market in this way need to put in revolutionary physical distribution strategies. There are significant opportunities for cost-effective, specialist logistics services with customer focus. It means that retailers and third-party contractors must rethink their distribution and logistic strategies, increase investment and refocus on customer requirements. For retail businesses, the financial emphasis will shift from service costs at the customer interface to those associated with stockholding and distribution. In all of this, there will be increased opportunities for the logistics professional.
