ABSTRACT
This is the second article in a series of three, wherein the authors started off with a strategic paper on lean manufacturing which was published in the August 1999 edition of the periodical "Logistics and Transport Focus." This article sets out a route map to the operational delivery of some of the vision in that strategic first article. The five lean principles are value, value stream, flow, pull and perfection. The 'road map' has been tested in two diverse service orientated supply chain sectors. In automotive after-sales, several franchises are successfully through the control, central logic and time steps, and the leading-edge companies are developing plans for LDC structures. The case study evidence, the authors believe, generically demonstrates that control, central logic and time steps remove demand amplification from the supply chain.
