ABSTRACT
Results of the survey conducted by the Warehousing and Materials Handling Special Interest Group of the Institute of Logistics and Transport among selected members in order to assess the success/failure of recent warehouse projects, the level of automation involved, and the link, if any, between the level of automation and project success were presented. Strategic planning was the reason why 35 percent of respondents' companies invested in automated warehousing systems. Specialist logistics consultancies were the preferred option, being solely responsible for 40 percent of respondents projects. The second preferred option in 25 percent of projects was the in-house project team. 65 percent or respondents claimed that the project had been a success. Of these 55 percent were part automated warehouses and ten percent fully automated.
