ABSTRACT
How supply chain management is on the agenda of the National Health Service (NHS) of Great Britain for improving performance is discussed in this article. Progress has already been made, with the NHS Logistics Authority already providing services such as supply channel for all consumable products, transaction manager, emergency services provider, electronic commerce supply chain solutions provider, and consultancy and support. The NHS Logistics Authority acts as a center of advice and leadership to NHS Trusts on supply chain matters, assisting them in pinpointing opportunities to synchronize their own internal supply channels to realize efficiencies and cost savings. One way of achieving this is thought to be through forming Supply Management Confederations. Training must address the recognized skills shortage. Collaboration in the form of Supply Management Confederations is one way to knowledge/skill share across trusts and also with suppliers.
