The ideas of Graeme Dunlop, which he delivered during the 2002 Reginald Grout Lecture are presented in this article. A short history of the P and O European Ferries and the challenges that the company faces today were issues covered by Graeme Dunlop. He split his presentation into two segments. The company began on a strategy that would turn the company around. The first was the rebranding in to the P and O European Ferries. The company needed a fresh start and this was seen as one of the most important ways of doing it. The next was the curbing of the union stranglehold on the company. Business was centralized in Dover and a massive investment program was undertaken. New ships, were brought in, services enhanced and a much greater emphasis was placed on staff training and customer care. The challenges that faces the company, as of 2002, are that the Channel Tunnel has sought to attract custom away from the ferry routes and the loss of duty free. There then followed a question and answer session in which he again stressed the problems he sees as being caused by government aid.
