ABSTRACT
According to the income protection provider, unumProvident, the real cost of staff sickness absence for employer in Great britain could be up to 23 billion per annum. Research from the insurer shows that many employers are not factoring in the 'hidden' expense associated with employees' sickness absence including low productivity, absence management, attraction and recruitment, employee turnover, employee under-performance, and training and development. The research points to the fact that employers could be doing a lot more to reduce the cost of absence to their businesses. Some factors to consider include number of part-time staff, approach to organizing cover, age profile of workforce, work location, and balance between short-term and long-term absence.
