ABSTRACT
This article discusses the benefits from, and techniques involved in, simulating materials handling systems before building them takes place. Several benefits are supplied by the simulation of a system at the design stage. From a marketing perspective, the creation of a simple tree-dimensional visual representation makes it possible to demonstrate the proposed installation to the client company, and thus illustrate the elegance of the intended solution. Of greater importance is the ability to test the draft mechanical layout in order to verify its suitability for the task in question. Once a system is functional, simulation continues to be useful, since it can be employed to predict how any future modifications to the installation will affect it as a whole.
