ABSTRACT
This article reports that the study on the external costs of transport in Western Europe, compiled by different independent consultants, has been published at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium in 2000. The aim of the study is to enhance knowledge on the way in which all modes of transportation affect the environment and to quantify this impact in socio-economic terms. The external costs of transportation, excluding congestion, for 1995 amount to 530 billion euros, or 7.8 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the 17 European countries concerned. When congestions is included in the equation, from the results of an intermediary assessment, the external costs of transport amount to almost 658 billion euros or roughly ten percent of the European GDP.
