ABSTRACT
This article reports that the Transport Studies Group at the University of Westminster has completed, in 2000, an exploratory study of urban freight transport in Great Britain. The aim of the research was to develop and apply a framework for understanding urban freight transport in its broadest sense that reflected the scope of freight and service-related transport activity in urban areas. There are significant differences in the total number and timing of goods vehicles movements of seemingly similar types of premises. The relative number of different types of goods trips varies between premises. The service requirements of urban premises can be as, and in some cases more, important than goods collections and deliveries in terms of successful functioning of the premises.
