ABSTRACT
According to Geoff Muirhead, chief executive of the Manchester Airport and Chris Mulligan, director general of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, the business community in the northern and western part of Great Britain has played a key role in lobbying for government investment in the public transportation infrastructure, but more can be done to tackle the traffic congestion. Geoff Muirhead outlined the airport's strategy for playing its part in regional economic growth and traffic management. Chris Mulligan outlined some of the significant public transportation development across Greater Manchester in England, as of June 2000. He also assessed the impact on businesses of new powers in the Transport Bill enabling local authorities to introduce congestion charging or workplace parking space charges.
