ABSTRACT
This article reports that a new approach to railroad freight has been short-listed for a five million pound prize by the Shadow Strategic Rail Authority of Great Britain, as of June 2000. The logistics solution uses sophisticated techniques learned from the experience of the Exel company in the retail and automotive industries of the country. In the last ten years, the company has eliminated nearly five million truck journeys from the roads of the country by employing rail freight and the company believes that if the project wins the prize, it could have a material effect on traffic congestion and the environment. The competition prize will enable the proposal to be run as a trial over a period of one year.
