ABSTRACT
The topic for discussion at the recent meeting of the Logistics Directors' Forum, in 2001, was the role of risk management in the supply chain, and how this approach fitted in with the challenge of supply chain optimization. The key address was given by Mehernosh Lentin. In his view, one of the key factors influencing the job of managing risk within the supply chain was the need to achieve a balance of expectations between customers and shareholders. On the one hand, he pointed out that customers demanded low prices, high levels of flexibility and high service levels. On the other, shareholders required growth, positive cash flow and increases in stock prices. In the breakout sessions the forum members split into two groups and considered three topics. These are the role of risk management in supply chain optimization, the top three key aspects, and the ways to incorporate the three key aspects in supply chain strategy.
