ABSTRACT
This article reports that on September 10, 2001, members of the Institute of Logistics and Transport met to conduct a discussion on warehouse management systems (WMS), how to choose them, what to do with them, how to implement them and how to get on with life again afterwards. The attendees had various aims including understanding whether they are doing the right thing, understanding how to install a WMS without reducing the capability of the workforce, forecasting the future and discussing the probloems of interfacing. the agenda was lengthy and not everything was covered. Some of the topics prompted extremely lively debate, especially the matter of choosing a system. There are more than 20 companies offering WMS software of one form or another. Choosing between them can be difficult and expensive.
