ABSTRACT
This article focuses on new schemes that will help the haulage industry address its serious skills shortages and lack of drivers. The schemes are getting underway in 2001 with a five million pound cash injection from the government of Great Britain. The funds are part of the 100 million pound haulage modernization fund announced by chancellor Gordon Brown in his 2001 budget. The details have been developed and endorsed by the training subgroup of the Road haulage Forum and focus on recruiting more young drivers and protecting employer's investment in training. The schemes are the Expansion of the Young Driver Scheme, the Modern Apprenticeship demonstration and the Transferable Training Loans.
