ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the Road Operators' Safety Council (ROSCO). Founded as long ago as 1955, the ROSCO is an organization concerned with the promotion of road safety. It had the slogan 'A driving force for road safety.' Its primary strategy is the administration of an Annual Safe Driving Awards Scheme. This provides awards, diplomas and badges in recognition of safe driving for those drivers who are successful. Surveys of companies have shown that the scheme not only has a positive effct on a company's accident record, but also enhances public perception of that company as being safety conscious. By recognizing and rewarding safe driving, and not assuming it is automatic, The ROSCO Safe Driving Awards Scheme enhances drives' pride in their jobs. Recent proposals to increase employer responsibility for work-related safety mean that companies will need evidence that they are taking proactive measures to promote safety and freedom from accidents.
