ABSTRACT
This article presents the experiences of Kevin O'Keefe, one of the few students who were awarded free places at the 1999 Logistics Conference of the Institute of Logistics and Transport, upon visiting the Bass National Distribution Center. Following a brief introduction to the center and the systems employed, the delegates were led around the purpose-built center. It is designed on stock rotation principles rather than cross-docking. This is achieved with the use of a warehouse management system and radio terminals fitted to each forklift truck. The efficient movement of the pallets around the warehouse was, in his view, a very good benchmark for those wishing to world class in this area of logistics control.
