ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the problems facing the logistics and transportation sector in Great Britain, as of August 2001. Rising traffic congestion is but one example of the awkward dillemas that lie ahead. Its social effects and impact upon costs across the piece, are becoming ever more significant. While the government has some measures in hand, the benefits these may bring look increasingly vulnerable to traffic growth driven by factors that are outside the confines of strategic transport planning. The author believes that professionals in the sector must take a close interest in this and do all they can to stimulate action on the basis of professional commonsense.
