ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the truck driver skills shortage in Great Britain, as of March 2002. The unavoidable conclusion from statistics given is that a substantial proportion of Large Goods Vehicle holders find it more attractive not to use their driving skills professionally. Most surveys that have appeared on this subvject concentrate on vitally important, but mechanistic, issues such as pay, hours of work and legal factors. This article would like to emphasize the equally important area of human relationships in the workplace. many issues that make drivers feel discouraged fall into this area and can easily be influenced for the good. These include the lack of complete and ongoing training, lack of respect and status, excessive pressure to perform, discipline, poor management, alck of communication, poor image of the profession, traffic congestion and poo roadside facilities.
