ABSTRACT
The article discusses the benefits to firms of certifications in information technology (IT). Microsoft Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., and Sun Microsystems are among vendors that have developed certification programs for their products. Data suggest the year 2001 will witness a shortfall of several hundred skilled IT personnel. Certifications help insure that the IT workers a firm hires are qualified. By reimbursing employees for the costs of certification a firm openly demonstrates its commitment to quality, as well as to the betterment of its work force.
