ABSTRACT
After more than 40 years of his death by natural causes, the figure of Franco projects its shadows over the Spanish society in several ways and polemical forms. The object of a charismatic public cult during the almost forty years of his dictatorship, between 1936 and 1975, his quick elimination from the public and political sphere can only be understood as a part of the so-called «pact of forgetfulness» which made it possible the transition to democracy. Probably by this reason the consequent opinion polls over the man and his historical meaning reveal a general indifference towards him compatible with a majority of negative judgments. Franco, in short, is an uncomfortable spectre of the past in process of dissolution but still difficult to understand by the Spanish society in a unanimous way.
