The article presents commentary from Dennis D. Powell of Cisco Systems Inc. and Eric Duenwald of General Electric Co. on how their firms effectively digitized their financial function. Powell notes that his firm's decision to standardize its financial reporting system and transaction processing offered a timely opportunity to introduce digital technology. Duenwald discusses how General Electric used digitization to improve operations across business units, rather than just within each unit. Both men counsel that digitization should not precede efforts to improve a firm's processes. INSET: What Did GE's e-Finance Team Learn?.
