The article discusses trends in strategic and business planning that are related to advances in information technology. Strategic planning systems facilitate input of information across all levels of the organization, give immediate feedback to managers, provide insight into market opportunities, identify the organization's core competencies, and establish long-term strategic objectives. Top-down and bottom-up approaches take the place of the hierarchical methods that were used in traditional strategic planning. Technologies, such as OLAP or online analytical processing which is used in business analysis software, improve companies' ability to respond quickly to market changes, compete more efficiently, and grow faster and more profitably.
