ABSTRACT
Taking the example of digitising historical collections, this article does not only describe the way from the first steps to today's challenges of digitising collections and digital humanities1, it also places digitisation as such into a broader context. In the library system, digitisation does not merely mean any more scanning instead of making photocopies or the integration of links into bibliographic records, or assembling free digital collections for the library's catalogue, it also includes automation in the sense of interlinked production processes. The object is to avoid redundant processes by reusing already existing data or infrastructure in the technical or staff area to conduct further digital projects and offer services without causing once again considerable expenses. Finally, digitisation in libraries also means keeping up with technical developments and with our users' demands.
